Guide adapted from the patient recommendations of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), the reference body in endodontics. The prognosis of an injured tooth depends, above all, on how quickly it receives care.
Don't touch or scrape the root of the tooth — only the crown (the visible biting surface). Don't scrub it, wash it with soap or chemicals, or wrap it in cloth or paper. Don't let it dry out or store it in tap water.
If it's dirty, rinse it with water only, without scrubbing. Try to reinsert it in its socket right away, pushing it gently into place by the crown. If that's not possible, store it in milk, inside the mouth next to the cheek, or in a tooth preservation kit — never in tap water. See an endodontist or dentist immediately: ideally within the first 30 minutes, though there's still a chance to save the tooth even after an hour.
Don't try to force the tooth back into place yourself, and don't dismiss it assuming the looseness will go away on its own.
Seek professional care as soon as possible. The endodontist repositions and stabilizes the tooth with a splint. In permanent teeth, root canal treatment usually begins a few days after the injury; in children under 12 it may not be needed right away, since the tooth is still developing.
Don't apply topical painkillers (like Anbesol) or ointments to the area, and never place an aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.
If breathing through your mouth or drinking cold liquids hurts, bite on a clean, damp piece of gauze until you reach the office. Seek a dental evaluation as soon as possible: if the pulp (the inside of the tooth) was exposed, root canal treatment may be needed.
A root fracture usually requires stabilization with a splint while the tooth heals. The prognosis depends on where the fracture is located: the closer it is to the root tip, the better the prognosis.
